Blue Jays add slugger Springer, adding pop to AL East race

MLB

All-Star outfielder and 2017 World Series MVP George Springer has signed a six-year, $150 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, with the signature of the former Houston Astros finalizing the largest contract in the nearly 45 year-long history of the only MLB franchise outside of the U.S.

Springer turned 31 years old in September, having spent his entire seven-year career with the Astros.  In the 60-game 2020 season, his average dipped to .265 with 14 homer and 32 RBI’s.  In 2019, the outfielder put up career highs of 39 homers and 96 RBI’s with a .292 average.

The Blue Jays, in acquiring Springer, were able to outbid the New York Mets, who have shown an offseason willingness to spend, following the sale of that franchise to new owner Steve Cohen.
