Chillicothe’s Cypert/Keithley wins district doubles title

Chillicothe High School’s doubles entry of Hannah Cypert and Hunter Keithley beat Trenton’s Claire Utley and Lauren Dolan 6-2, 6-4 on Thursday afternoon, to win the doubles title in district competition in Chillicothe.  Despite the loss, the Trenton duo will join the Chillicothe pair in advancing to individual sectionals, played on Monday in St. Joseph.

Cypert and Keithley opened the day with a bye, courtesy of the #1 seed, then beat a Lafayette pair in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-2.  The Lady Hornet duo met Trenton’s Samantha Mihalovich and Maddie Searcy in the semifinals, and took a straight set victory 6-3, 6-2, while the championship victory over Utley and Dolan.

The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Hornets took the top four spots in doubles play, as Mihalovich and Searcy took third place medals back to THS, beating Brenna Bontrager and Madison Thogmartin of Cameron in the quarterfinals, 6-love, 6-1, and rebounding from their semifinal loss to down Lauren Gregory and Hannah Zimmerman of Chillicothe in the third place match, 6-4, 7-5.

Maryville’s Oglesby won the singles championship, while Chillicothe’s Gracy Reeter had a disappointing day, losing to Maryville in a quarterfinal upset, 6-1, 7-6.  Reeter came into play as the #1 overall seed.  Macy Cavanah of Chillicothe beat Emma Gilham of Trenton in the quarterfinals, 6-love, 6-3, one match after Gilham opened play beating Jocelyn Kallauner of Savannah 7-5, 6-love.  Cavanah lost to Oglesby in the semifinals 6-love, 6-love, and rallied for a victory in the third place match over Maryville 6-1, 6-3.

Trenton’s Elle Neal, playing in singles competition, beat Madison Jones of Lafayette in a straight-set first round sweep, 6-3, 6-love, before falling to Jacey Cornelius of Savannah, 6-love, 6-1.
