High School Basketball

The postseason is underway across Missouri for high school basketball, with numerous squads seeing their seasons come to a close over the past week, while a busy Saturday approaches with district championship games in area locations that include the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton, Chillicothe High School, Penney High School of Hamilton, and Schuyler County High School.

The Milan Wildcats have returned to a district final, with the two-time Grand River Conference champions, in Thursday night action heard on KTTN FM 92.3, taking down the rival Putnam County Midgets for the fourth time this season, winning a Class 2, District 6 boys semifinal 61-36.  Hunter Shaw led the Wildcats with 18 points with Eddie Gonzalez adding 17 in the win, improving Milan to 21-3 on the season.  Putnam County, ending the campaign at 13-12, had 10 points each from Hayden Halley and Marcus Furnish.

Earlier in the week, Milan ripped Schuyler County in the quarterfinal round 69-23, with Putnam County taking a hard-fought 59-56 win over KNox County.

Milan’s opponent in Saturday’s 3:30 title tilt from Schuyler County High School will be the Westran Hornets, a 56-48 semifinal winner over Salisbury.  In Tuesday night’s quarterfinal round, Westran beat Scotland County, 70-47, while Salisbury ended Marceline’s season, 76-65.

On the girls side of Class 2, District 6, Milan’s Lady Wildcats had their season close on Thursday, with a strong start against #1 seed Salisbury dissipating over the final three quarters in a 63-43 loss on KTTN FM 92.3.  Milan started the first quarter up 13-6, but trailed by two points at the half and was outscored 39-19 in the second half, as Salisbury improves to 22-3 on the season.  The Lady ‘Cats, in a season that saw a Grand River Conference East title, finishes 16-8.

Salisbury was led by Chloe Wyatt with 20 points, with Bryn Wooldridge scoring 17 and Abigail Gebhardt 15 points.  Cady Pauley had a game-high 26 points for MHS, with Tahli Gray, in her final game in Lady ‘Cat “Green and Gold”, adding 13.

Salisbury will play the Scotland County Lady Tigers in Saturday’s 2 o’clock District 6 girls championship game in Queen City, after Scotland County beat the rival Schuyler County Lady Rams in Thursday night’s second girls semifinal, 56-32.

In quarterfinal round action on Monday night, Salisbury routed Westran 66-21, with Milan downing Marceline 61-58, Scotland County over Knox County 43-25, and Schuyler County defeating Putnam County 67-44.

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs have a meeting with arch-rival Chillicothe on the Lady Hornets home floor on Saturday night (5 o’clock – KTTN FM 92.3) for the Class 3, District 14 championship, after the Lady Bulldogs were able to grind out a pair of low-scoring, hard-earned wins earlier this week.

On Monday night, Trenton defeated Richmond by a score of 43-32, and two nights later, the Lady Bulldogs overcame a slow start against Broookfield, rallying for a 42-32 win.

Chillicothe hammered Lexington in the quarterfinals 69-17, before a convincing 47-31 win over Carrollton in the Wednesday night semifinal round.  The other girls quarterfinals from Chillicothe High School had Brookfield defeating St. Paul Lutheran 48-41, while the Carrollton Lady Trojans defeated Higginsville 52-31.

The Trenton-Chillicothe winner will advance to play in the Class 3 girls sectional round on Wednesday night at Moberly Area Community College.
