Griffons, Bearcats split MIAA doubleheader in Maryville

NCAA

The Missouri Western women and Northwest Missouri State men claimed basketball wins on Tuesday night, as the long-time rivals met in a hoops doubleheader at Bearcat Arena in Maryville.

MWSU claimed a 72-58 victory in the women’s contest, as an 8-0 start to the game gave the Griffons needed early momentum.  A 7-2 run to start the fourth quarter helped to squash a Bearcat comeback, pushing Western’s lead to 66-51.  Junior Tanya Meyer, in the loss, scored 31 points for NWMSU.

The Northwest men, ranked #2 in the country in the latest NABC Top 25 poll, played strong, particularly early, in a 78-52 win over their archrivals from St. Joseph.  Highlighting the Bearcat win was a three-point shot by senior D’Vante Mosby in the first half that gave Northwest a 21-9 lead.  That shot pushed Mosby over the 1,000 point plateau for his collegiate career.

Coming out of Tuesday’s games, the Griffon women are 2-1 in the MIAA while Northwest is 0-2.  The Northwest men are 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA, while the Griffons are struggling at 1-8 overall, and 0-3 in the MIAA.
