Hamilton’s Cornelius medals, Trenton’s Gass finishes 28th, as girls golf season wraps up in Maryville

The Class 1 state golf championships finished up on Tuesday afternoon at the Mozingo Lake Course on the east side of Maryville, with John Burroughs winning the team championship with a two-day score of 701, while Kayla Pfitzner of Springfield Catholic took the individual title with a score of 154, two better than runner-up Reagan Zibilski of Springfield Catholic at 156.

The top area score was turned in by Sam Cornelius of Penney High School, with an 84 on Monday and 82 and Tuesday, good for 166 and a sixth place finish.

Trenton High School senior Werthen Gass finished her career with a solid effort battling through the cold conditions, with a score of 192 tying her with Stanberry’s Allie Gage in 28th place.

Maryville finished fifth on their home course, with a score of 807, with Chillicothe sixth at 850, Kirksville 7th and 893, and Stanberry in last place at 906.

The Class 2 state championships were held at Swope Park in Kansas City, with St. Joseph’s Academy winning the team title at 627, followed by Notre Dame de Sion (631) and Rock Bridge (671).  Megan Propeck of Notre Dame de Sion won the individual state crown, with a two-day score of 139, five shots under par.
