Influx of freshmen pushes Trenton’s golf numbers to 5 as season nears

Golf Golf Local Sports

Last season, Trenton High School girl’s golf coach Travis Mullenix had some fairly quiet bus rides, a rarity with the usual chatter of teenagers muted by lack of numbers, as two players that started the season ended up being one due to COVID-19 protocols by the end of the season.

Already 2021, in more ways than just the pandemic, looks different out at Riverside Country Club, as three freshmen have gone out for the Lady Bulldogs links team this season, joining two returning seniors for a group of five, enough to be able to compete in team competitions this fall.

Coach Mullenix has had late morning practices all this week at Trenton’s Riverside Country Club.  He gave us an overview of the incoming 9th graders on the squad:

Most of the schedule over the next two months will see THS in tournament play, with trips to Lawson, Gallatin, Richmond and Chillicothe before the Grand River Conference event on October 4th.  Mullenix reflected on how much the girl’s competitive spirits in that event grew as the program became acclimated in the conference a few years ago:

Leadership both on and off the course this fall will fall on the shoulders of the two returning seniors, Josie Chumbley and Mari Atup, to the Lady Bulldog roster:

Trenton opens the season with a head-to-head duel at Brookfield on August 31st, before heading to the Lawson Tournament on Wednesday, September 8th.
