The Trenton Lady Bulldogs held off a strong challenge from the Benton Cardinals, winning at Noyes Courts in St. Joseph on Monday afternoon, 6-3.
Trenton was able to win 4 of 6 singles matches in decisive fashion, with Maddie Searcy and Emma Gilham both victorious by 8-love routs. Lauren Dolan breezed to an 8-1 win, with Samantha Mihalovich doubling up her opponent, 8-4. For Benton, Brooklyn Dilley claimed a victory over Elle Neal of the Lady Bulldogs, winning a tiebreaker 7-1 after the girls had played to an 8-8 draw. Stephanie Brown of Benton, at #1 singles, defeated Trenton’s Claire Utley 8-3.
In doubles play, Trenton closed out the win with Emma Gilham and Latorrie Johnson combining for an 8-1 win over Rachel Stobbs and Dilley, while Mihalovich and Searcy downed Haleigh Peters and Sydney Brown 8-4. Benton’s #1 doubles team of Brown and Shyann Reynolds took a hard-fought 8-5 decision over Utley and Dolan.
In junior varsity action, four doubles and six singles matches were played, with Trenton winning the team contest 8-2. For Trenton in doubles, Kendall Crowley and Latorrie Johnson won 6-1, Emily Bonta and Gwyneth Foster 6-love, and Bailea Jeannoutot and Amanda Parrack 6-3. Kennedy and Carly Wanstreet lost their doubles match 3-6.
In singles play, Crowley won 6-love, Bonta 6-3, Foster 6-1, Kennedy Wanstreet 6-4, and Jeannoutot 6-3. Carly Wanstreet lost a close match to Benton’s McCoy 6-8.
Trenton’s tennis team will be at Lexington this (Tuesday) afternoon for a 4 o’clock duel with the Minutewomen. Senior Night for THS will be Thursday afternoon at 4 o’clock, with the Lady Bulldogs hosting the Kirksville Tigers.
