Marceline and Blair Oaks tied for the championship of the Gary Haag boys invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday at Brookfield High School.

Marceline and Blair Oaks each tallied 57 points, two more than third-place Brookfield’s 55.  Fourth-place Centralia had 44 points, with Trenton in fifth place at 49.

Penney High School of Hamilton was sixth with 42, while Gallatin was ninth place with 30 points.

Among area teams, Brookfield had four champions in the top division — Peyton Parn at 113 pounds, Gambal Staddie at 126, Colton Parn at 145, and Jaden Abongo at 170 pounds.

Trenton had two champions — Coleman Griffin at 152 and Sam Gibson at 195 pounds.

Other area champions in the top division were Drew Griffin of Marceline at 106 pounds, Logan Bottcher of Gallatin at 182, and Fisher Nixdorf of Penney at 220 pounds.

Trenton’s Brayden Hughs at 132 pounds and Hunter McAtee at 138 both were second.  Caleb Johnson finished with a 3-2 record at 220 pounds to finish third, as all wrestling was done by rounds.

Trenton head coach Charlie Bacon indicated it was the toughest tournament THS has been in this season.  Coach Bacon went on to say a good majority of the weight were a “preview of what will be the top four wrestlers in the various classes at state”.
