Penney’s Cornelius shoots even-par 72 to take Chillicothe title, Trenton’s Gass 6th

Penney High School golfer Sam Cornelius shot a front-nine 37 and back-nine 35 for an even-par score of 72, winning Thursday’s Chillicothe Invitational Golf Tournament at the Green Hills Golf Course.  Finishing a close second to Cornelius, three shots back at 75, was Macon’s Paige Hawkins, with Maryville’s Emily Long shooting 77, good for 3rd place.

The top score for the host Chillicothe Lady Hornets was a fifth-place effort of 84 from Hallie Jones, while Trenton High School junior Werthen Gass shot 85, good for 6th place.

Macon shot 349 as a team, winning the title for the Tigerettes, with Maryville second at 356, and Kirksville third at 381.  Plattsburg was fourth place at 400, with Chillicothe fifth at 402.  Trenton finished in a 9th place tie with Southwest Livingston, both at 450.  Other schools at the event were Moberly, Lawson, Richmond, Marceline, and Cameron.

In addition to the 85 shot by Gass, other Trenton scores were 118 from Oakley Madden, 119 for Maci Henson, and Grace Holcomb at 128.
