Princeton, Green City fall in Class 1 baseball playoffs

High School Baseball Local Sports

The baseball seasons for the district championship teams from Princeton and Green City ended on Monday night, with the Tigers falling to Platte Valley 10-1 and the Gophers, despite having homefield advantage, coming up short against North Shelby, falling 5-1.

In a Class 1 sectional played in Guilford, Princeton’s Talan Holt went against Platte Valley’s Wyatt Miller in the pitching matchup, with Miller retiring the Tigers in order in the top of the 1st, and Holt sending down a pair of Platte Valley players in the bottom half of the inning.  A double by Memphis Bliley broke the slow offensive start for the home team, with a walk, and back-to-back RBI singles giving PV the early 3-0 advantage.

Princeton upped hopes for a road upset in the top of the 2nd inning with a single tally, only to see Platte Valley run away in the “Round of 16” contest with five runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning.  Two more runs in the home 4th had the District 16 champions up by a decisive 10-1 margin.  The relief combination of Bliley and Jermain held the Tigers offense in check with four scoreless frames.

The win sends Platte Valley into a lengthy Wednesday night road trip to Shelbyville, Missouri to play the 12-3 sectional champions from North Shelby High School.  Princeton ends the season with a record of 14-8.

Behind Casey Shockley’s complete game three-hitter, the Raiders ended Green City’s season on Monday night, winning 5-1.  Lack of command by Gopher starter Aaron Peavler, who walked six batters in the first two innings, directly led to a North Shelby run in the 1st inning and an early 1-0 edge.  In the second inning, Shockley cracked a two-RBI hit to extend the Raiders lead to 3-0.

Green City only managed an RBI hit by Brody Lunsford in the bottom of the 6th inning, with Shockley slamming the door on any other potential Gopher uprisings, improving the Raiders to 12-3, and ending Green City’s season at 16-2.
