Roberts’ strong pitching, Cowling’s clutch hit, lead Trenton to 4-1 win

High School Softball Local Sports

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs fell behind 1-0 after a run-scoring triple by Brookfield’s Kaydence Almond in the top of the first inning, but strong pitching by sophomore Emma Roberts kept BHS scoreless for the final six innings, while Trenton scraped four runs across the plate in a 4-1 win, broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3.

Mya Sackrey reached base on a leadoff walk in the first, stole second, and was sacrificed to third base by Greenlee McCollum, before Almond’s hard shot to right bounced off the glove off Trenton’s Shay Westerhof, scoring Sackrey.

Trenton’s speed on the bases proved key in tying the game in the home 2nd, as Morgan King led off the single with a single, moved to second on an outfield error, and took third on a sacrifice bunt by Jena Harris.  With two outs in the inning, Teya Cooksey hit a high-bouncing ball to third baseman McCollum, with the throw to first not in time, scoring King.

Trenton took the lead with two outs and Madi Moore on second base in the 4th inning, with Eliana Cowling at the plate, and Tom Johnson on the mic:

Trenton found two more insurance runs in the 5th inning, as Westerhof led off with a bunt single and stole second.  A wild pitch pushed Westerhof to third, with a double past the third base line by Gracyn Rongey making the score 3-1.  Rongey moved to third base on a fly ball from Chandler Lynch, and scored on a throwing error by Brookfield.

Roberts retired six in a row to end the game, following a lead-off single by McCollum in the top of the 6th inning.  Roberts earned the win with seven innings of four-hit softball, allowingh one walk while striking out three.  Trenton will host Cameron on Thursday night at 5:30.
