THS advances five to Class 1 state wrestling tournament

Local Sports Wrestling

Five Trenton High School wrestlers have qualified for the Class 1 boys state tournament at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence.  Hunter McAtee and Brice Gibler both won sectional championships on Saturday afternoon at Mid-Buchanan High School (Faucett, MO), with Caleb Johnson finishing second, while Coleman Griffin and Sam Gibson both advanced to state with third place finishes.  The state tournament will be held on Wednesday, March 10th.

Here is Trenton head coach Charlie Bacon:

There are several changes this year in the state wrestling tournaments to deal with COVID-19 and other restrictions.  Among them, there will be five separate state tournaments at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence, with each tournament held on a separate day.  The girls state tournament is March 9th, boys Class 1 on March 10th, Class 2 on March 11th, Class 3 on March 12th, and Class 4 on March 13th.

There will be 12 wrestlers per weight class instead of the traditional 16.  That is to comply with National High School Federation rules limiting the number of matches for an individual to five per day.

First place finishers at sectionals have a first-round bye at state.  There are no first-round wrestlebacks.
