THS wrestling to send five boys, along with sophomore Avery Clark, to Class 1 state championships

The Trenton High School boys wrestling team has qualified five individuals for the Class 1 state tournament after the second day of competition wrapped up on Saturday afternoon from District 3 at Lafayette County High School in Higginsville.

Centralia won the district title with 234 points, followed by Brookfield’s 172.5 and third place Trenton’s 121.5, just ahead of fourth place Tolton Catholic’s tally of 120.5.  Fifth place Marceline racked up 118.5 points.  There were 15 schools in the District 3 competition.

Trenton was third despite having just nine wrestlers.  Centralia, Brookfield, and Tolton each had full rosters of 14 wrestlers, with Marceline boasting 11.

Trenton had two district champions with Hunter McAtee at 144 pounds and Sam Gibson at 190.  Brayden Hughs was runner-up at 138, with Mason Rongey third at 126, and Gavin Chambers fourth at 157: 

The Bulldogs remaining four wrestlers, despite not qualifying for state, all scored valuable team points through their successes at the two-day district meet:

In other results from the District 3 boys tournament, Brookfield qualified seven for the state tournament, including district champions Trayce Switzer (106), Peyton Parn (126), and Devan Parn (175).  Marceline advanced five to state, Gallatin four, and Penney three, including 215 pound champion Fisher Nixdorf.

St. Pius X won the District 4 tournament at Lathrop High School with 203.5 points.  Maysville was second (175), Lawson third (145), and South Harrison fourth (111) among the 16 schools.

Maysville qualified nine of its ten wrestlers for the state tournament, a group that includes district champions Cooper Berry (120), Kaleb Jestes (150), and Konnor Watkins (heavyweight).

South Harrison qualified six for state.  

Mid-Buchanan was first and Cameron second in the Boys Class 2 District 4 tournament at Excelsior Springs High School.

The Dragons out of the KCI Conference racked up 191 points, with Cameron at 164.  Fifth-place Chillicothe had 111 points.  Chillicothe has five state qualifiers, including district champion Cayden Larson at 157 pounds.

Several area athletes qualified for the Class 1 girls state tournament, including Trenton’s Avery Clark, in the Class 1, District 3 tournament in Wentzville on Friday, February 10th and Saturday, February 11th.  Brookfield was first and Marceline third in the team standings. 

Trenton’s Clark was third at 140 pounds, rallying through the wrestle-back rounds to advance after a disappointing loss the prior night.  Here is Lady Bulldog coach Trey Shields: 

Brookfield’s Lady ‘Dogs will advance seven to state, including district champions Mya Sackrey (140) and Jayden Keller (110).  Dianna Linscott was second at 125.  Third place finishers for Brookfield were Jenna Keller (115), Kacen Brown (130), and Riley Howell (145).  Addison Pope of BHS was fourth at 120 pounds.

Marceline has five state qualifiers, with Maddie Dauber (100) and Peyton Weese (135) both second.  Coming in fourth were Madison Teeter (105), Ella Lowe (155), and Molly Sportsman (190).  

Chillicothe’s Yoo Lee was second at 120 pounds in the District 3 tournament at Wentzville.

Brookfield won the district title with 172 points, followed by Southern Boone (141.5) and Marceline (130.5).  Odessa won the District 4 tournament at Kearney High School with 146.5 points.  Kearney was second (122) and Cameron seventh (84), with Polo’s 70 points good for ninth place.

Champions from District 4 were Valorie Gabrielli of Polo (145), Justice Brewer of Cameron (155), and Hollie Hedgpeth of Cameron (235).

Third place finishes included Abigail Burnett of Cameron (145), Abigail Parker of Gallatin (170), and Keeleigh Fish of Albany (190).

Among those placing fourth in the Kearney event were Kentli Whitaker of South Harrison, Natalie West of Penney, Kenley Moore of Polo, Karydon Jones of Gallatin, and Mesa Welch of Polo.

The boys Class 1 and 2 state wrestling championships and the Class 1 girls state meet will be contested this Wednesday and Thursday (February 22nd and 23rd) at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
