The Trenton Lady Bulldogs were able to grind out a 31-22 victory over the Putnam County Lady Midgets on Monday night, in high school basketball action on Hot Country Z 101.7.  The win pushes Trenton’s record to 14-8 overall and 5-1 in GRC Eastern Division games, one game behind Milan for first place in the division.

THS jumped out to a 9-0 lead after one quarter, and while the Bulldogs offense did scuffle in the final three quarters, the defense held strong, and let Putnam County no closer than four points in the final minutes.

Freshman small forward Mirena King led Trenton with 14 points, while senior point guard Chandler Lynch added eight points, including four big fourth quarter free throws to give Trenton needed breathing room.

Head coach Kameron Cool, with his team now set for a “Winner Take All” battle for the GRC East title on Tuesday night against Milan, looked forward to the challenge at hand:

Putnam County, dropping to a record of 9-9 overall and 1-4 in GRC East play, had nine points from Jenna Knowles, with Grace Schnelle scoring five.  The Lady Midgets have GRC games with Princeton (Wednesday) and Maysville (Thursday) before Saturday’s crossover event at Milan High School.

The boys game saw a strong Putnam County team blow out Trenton early, outscoring the Bulldogs 34-4 in the first quarter and cruising to the 71-27 win, improving the Midgets to 17-1 overall, and a perfect 5-0 in GRC play.  Trenton falls to 0-20 overall and 0-6 in GRC competition.

Lance Fowler paced Putnam County with 17 points, with 15 of those in a sizzling first quarter performance.  Zach Heidenwith had 14 and Owen Ream 12 points for PC.

Trenton, in the midst of a rebuilding season with inexperienced youngsters across the roster, ran into a Putnam County team filled with skill and balance, according to head coach Corbin Coe:

Gabe Novak led Trenton with 11 points, with Kiefer Tolson adding seven.  Putnam County, by virtue of its road victory, and a 74-53 victory for the Gallatin Bulldogs over the Maysville Wolverines, took sole possession of first place in the GRC East by a game over Gallatin and Maysville.  Putnam County beat Gallatin in mid-December, and will play Maysville this Thursday night.
