Trenton repeated as Grand River Conference boys wrestling tournament champions on Saturday afternoon, finishing 11 points ahead of second-place Maysville.  THS accumulated 151.5 points, 11 more than the Wolverines total of 140.5.  Polo edged South Harrison for third place (101-100), followed by Albany, Gallatin, Stanberry, and North Andrew.  The tournament was held at the South Harrison High School gymnasium in Bethany.

The team champions from THS had the most individual champions, with Mason Rongey taking the GRC title at 126 pounds, Brayden Hughs at 138, Gavin Chambers at 157, and Sam Gibson at 190.

Fourth-place South Harrison and sixth-place Gallatin each had three individual champions, with Dawson Pelletier winning a GRC title for the host Bulldogs at 113, joined by Crae Coffey at 215, and heavyweight Jarret Eivins.

Gallatin’s champions were Eli Sperry at 106, Draven Wright at 144, and Logan Bottcher at 175 pounds.  Maysville had two first-place finishers, with Cooper Berry at 120 and Brandon Barton at 150.  Other GRC championships were claimed by Polo’s Ayden Baker at 132 pounds an Albany’s Kyle Burke at 165.

An early key for Trenton’s team championship showed up early, as the Bulldogs rolled to an 8-1 record in the opening round, with all eight triumphs by pin.

Here is Trenton head wrestling coach Charlie Bacon:

Trenton will host Higginsville and Stanberry on Thursday evening at 5:30 at the THS gymnasium.  It is the last home action of the season for the Bulldogs.  Trenton held its Senior Night recognitions last week in a dual against Chillicothe, thus avoiding the potential of a weather-related cancellation for the final home appearance for the team.  Following the final regular season action, Trenton will have a two week wait for district competition, set for the weekend of February 17th and 18th at Lafayette County High School in Higginsville.

Polo had the most entries in the GRC’s girls wrestling tournament and easily captured the team title with 154 points.  Second place Gallatin had 34 points.  The Polo girls had ten participants.  Runner-up Gallatin was next with just three entries.  Trenton’s lone participant was Avery Clark, who won the 140 pound weight class.

Placing first for Polo were Cierra Stigger at 110, Celeste Harris at 120, Kenley Moore at 135, Valorie Gabriella at 145, Malia Bell at 170, and Mesa Welch at 190.  Mylie Carr of Polo was the only entry at 130 pounds.

The other champions in the GRC girls wrestling tournament were Kentli Whitaker of South Harrison at 115 pounds and Jaclyn Reidinger of North Andrew at 125.
