The Trenton Bulldog wrestling team returned to the mats on Thursday night, traveling to Maysville, as the Wolverines hosted the Bulldogs, in addition to the Carrollton Trojans.  Trenton beat Carrollton 54-30, but lost a close affair to the hosts from MHS, 42-36.

Carrollton was light on numbers, a key factor in Trenton’s 54 points against the Trojans.  However, at 170 pounds, Nick Wattenbarger got the first takedown against Noah Frank and ended up with a pin at the 2 minute mark.  At 113 pounds, Trenton’s Quincy Griffin was pinned by Alec Appleberry at the 1:13 mark.  The rest of the weight classes between the Bulldogs and the Trojans were empty, resulting in forfeit results.

Against Maysville, Trenton Coach Charlie Bacon bemoaned the Bulldogs “making too many mistakes and letting too many chances to score go by” in the six point loss.  Highlights for Trenton included Canyon VonBurg, at 120 pounds, beating Maysville’s Zoie Sears, with the Wolverine product bowing out due to second period injury.  At 182 pounds, Mark Trump pinned Dakota Chapman to grab points for THS, while at 195 pounds, Jadan Whitney, bouncing back from a high-ankle sprain suffered in mid-December, earning a pin over Trey Scoles.

At 126 pounds, Maysville’s Dylan Wade took a 24-7 tech fall win over Trenton’s Luca Nichols.  At 132 pounds, Jared Eads of the Wolverines pinned Trenton’s Brice Gibler.  Dalton Wade of Maysville, wrestling at 145 pounds, took a 14-6 major decision over Trenton’s Eric Lovett, while Payden McCullough of THS was pinned by Jake Redman of Maysville at 152.

At 160 pounds, the Bulldogs Lucas Clark was pinned by Cole Gripka of Maysville, while Nick Wattenbarger lost a 9-2 decision to Maysville’s Trent Strong at 170 pounds.

Going forward, with Trenton’s next wrestling action in a home quadrangular next Thursday night (January 11th), Coach Bacon says his team will need to improve on “staying out of bad positions”, reiterating the importance of “capitalizing on scoring opportunities”.
