Marceline stuns Lady Bulldogs on Trenton’s Senior Night

High School Softball
Less than 48 hours removed from a third-place finish at Saturday’s Centralia Tournament, that included the program’s first loss of 2016, the Trenton Lady Bulldogs saw their loss total double on Monday night, with the Marceline Lady Tigers stunning Trenton, 6-5 in ten innings, in a varsity softball contest broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7.
Trenton struggled on the defensive side, and paid for their mistakes, with four errors playing key roles in Marceline rallying from a 2-0 deficit after five innings to grab the road win.
Trenton struggled to adjust to the change of speeds of Marceline’s Maycee Edgar all night, collecting only 7 hits.  The Bulldogs were held scoreless until the bottom of the 5th inning when Katerina Black doubled off the center field fence with one out.  Mykah Hurley followed with a single, then Jaylen Neff singled home McKayla Blackburn (running for Black) to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.  Ainsley Tolson followed with an RBI groundout to score Hurley to make the score 2-0.
Marceline loaded the bases after Tolson retired the first batter in the top of the 6th inning.  A fielding error by Trenton but a runner on first with one out.  After an Abbie Pfeiffer strikeout, Gabby Bollman walked and Baylee Jobson singled.  Designated player Darcy Dorrell tied the game with a two-run single, with a throwing error allowing Jobson to score the go-ahead run.
In the top of the 7th inning, Marceline again for a 5-2 lead.  A Pfeiffer two-run double scored Elaine Ewigman and Maycee Edgar.
Trenton, down to its final three outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, got a lead-off single from Katerina Black. Tenna Roberts singled to put runners on 1st and second base.  With 2 outs, Ainsley Tolson was looking for a long ball to try to tie the contest.
Both teams were held scoreless until the 10th inning when Pfeiffer led off the Marceline half of the inning with a triple.  After a Bollman strikeout, Jobson hit a sacrifice fly for the game-winning run, as the Lady Bulldogs went down in order in the bottom half of the inning.
For Trenton, Black and Roberts each went 2-4, Tolson was 1-5 with 4 RBI, while Jaylen Neff and Mykah Hurley had Trenton’s other 2 hits in the game.
Tolson pitched in tough luck all night, allowing 6 runs (0 earned), on 9 hits while striking out 16.  Coach John Cowling commented, “This was a tough way for our seniors to go out at home.  We just kept making too many mistakes and giving Marceline too many chances to score runs.  We can’t let this loss affect us going forward.”
Trenton is now 20-2 on the season, with Marceline improving to 16-5.  Trenton is at Brookfield tonight (Tuesday night) at 5 o’clock. Marceline’s Maycee Edgar earned the victory at Trenton, with 10 innings of work, giving up five runs on seven hits, with eight strikeouts. Marceline plays at Knox County in Lewis and Clark Conference action on Tuesday night.
