NFL to vote on Commanders sale to Josh Harris in July

NFL owners are expected to convene on July 20 for a special league meeting to consider and potentially vote on the sale of the Washington Commanders, according to a person familiar with the matter. The meeting, which was not publicly announced, will require the approval of 24 out of the 32 team owners, or three-quarters of the ownership group, to finalize the sale.

The prospective buyers are led by Josh Harris, the owner of the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Devils, and include basketball legend Magic Johnson. The sale is valued at a record-breaking $6.05 billion, surpassing the previous record set by the sale of the Denver Broncos.

If approved, the new ownership group would take control of the team before the start of the regular season in September. The sale comes after investigations into workplace misconduct and financial improprieties within the Washington organization, which led to increased scrutiny on owner Dan Snyder. The new owners’ primary focus will be on securing a new stadium to replace FedEx Field, the team’s current home.
