Northeast of Cairo girls roll past Canton, set up LaPlata title game showdown with Green City

The Green City Lady Gophers, the lone unbeaten team remaining in Missouri in Class 1 girls basketball, have learned their opponent for the LaPlata Invitational Tournament’s championship game, after the Northeast (Cairo) Lady Bearcats beat Canton in Thursday night’s semifinal round, 75-53.  The win pushes the Cairo girls to 15-4.  The title game between Green City and Cairo will be Saturday afternoon at 4:30 at LaPlata High School.  The Canton girls drop to the third place game, to play Madison, Friday night at 8 o’clock, while the Schuyler County girls will play North Shelby in the girls consolation final, Friday night at 5 o’clock, after the Lady Rams of Schuyler County won a consolation semifinal on Thursday afternoon, 53-17 over LaPlata.

In boys play on Thursday night, the LaPlata Bulldogs beat North Shelby 61-33, moving the hosts into Saturday night’s (6:00 PM) final against the #1 seed Canton Tigers.  The Green City boys, coming off a 10 point loss in the semifinals to Canton, will play North Shelby in the boys third place game, Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock.  

In the boys consolation round on Thursday night, Madison downed Schuyler County by a score of 71-64, advancing Madison to the consolation final (Friday at 6:30 PM) against the Northeast Bearcats.
