Utah Coyotes? NHL preparing for potential relocation to Salt Lake City

NHL

The NHL is exploring a potential relocation of the Arizona Coyotes to Utah for the upcoming season, sources informed ESPN. Despite the league’s preference for a franchise in Arizona, doubts linger over the Coyotes’ proposed arena construction plan in Phoenix.

A backup scenario involves the sale of the team to Ryan and Ashley Smith, Utah Jazz owners, with intentions to move the team to Salt Lake City. The NHL has devised alternate schedules for next season, one for the Coyotes in Arizona and another for a potential Utah team.

An official announcement regarding relocation could materialize this month, although sources caution the situation remains fluid. Approval from the NHL’s board of governors, which convenes next in June, is essential for relocation.

The Coyotes declined to comment on relocation reports, as did the NHL. Players acknowledge following developments through media reports but remain uncertain about the team’s future.

Since 2022-23, the Coyotes have played at Mullett Arena, a temporary venue on the Arizona State campus. The team’s agreement with ASU extends potentially until 2026-27.

In the event of relocation, the NHL would purchase the Coyotes from current owner Alex Meruelo, with intentions to sell to the Smiths, possibly at a price exceeding $1 billion. The league’s owners would share a portion of the sale proceeds.

Meruelo might have the option to acquire an NHL expansion team if the league returns to Arizona. Salt Lake City has emerged as a strong contender for expansion, with a trusting relationship between NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and Ryan Smith.

Smith Entertainment Group’s interest in an NHL franchise for Utah has gained momentum, buoyed by government support for arena development. The Delta Center, home to the Utah Jazz, could serve as the team’s temporary venue, pending hockey-specific renovations.

The Coyotes’ quest for a permanent home has spanned years, with previous plans thwarted by various challenges. A new proposal involving land acquisition in Phoenix awaits auction in June.

The last NHL relocation occurred in 2011 when the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg. Confirmation of that move was announced on May 31, 2011.
