Bearcats roll to home sweep over Newman in Saturday action

The Northwest Missouri State University women’s basketball team secured a convincing 79-49 victory against Newman University, marking their 13th win of the season. Molly Hartnett played a crucial role, contributing 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Caely Kesten also delivered an impressive performance with 17 points, four rebounds, and two assists.

The Bearcats dominated from the start, opening the game with a 14-3 scoring run. Despite Newman’s attempts to cut the lead in the second quarter, Northwest maintained control, with Kesten leading all scorers with 17 first-half points. Northwest extended their lead in the second half, outscoring Newman 15-11 in the third quarter.

The Bearcats finished the game on a 27-7 run, ultimately securing a 79-49 victory. Notably, Northwest tied a season-high of 27 forced turnovers while committing only six turnovers themselves. The team improved to 13-4 overall and 7-4 in the MIAA, while Newman dropped to 2-16 overall and 1-11 in conference play.

In men’s basketball, the No. 24-ranked Northwest Missouri State University team dominated Newman University Jets with a 76-47 home win. Wes Dreamer played a pivotal role, contributing 25 points. The Bearcats recorded their seventh consecutive home win, improving their overall season mark to 13-4 and leading the MIAA standings at 9-2.

Northwest utilized a 27-1 run in the second half, holding Newman to no made field goals over an 11-minute span. Despite Newman’s attempts to narrow the gap early in the second half, the Bearcats put the game away. The team tied a season-high with 12 made three-pointers.

Wes Dreamer, who scored only four points in the first half, came to life in the second half with 21 points, including perfect shooting from beyond the arc. Junior Mitch Mascari contributed with four three-pointers, continuing his strong performance. Junior Isaiah Jackson showcased his versatility with 10 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, two steals, and a block.

Northwest will continue their season with upcoming games against Central Missouri and Lincoln.
