Berrios stars as Toronto sweeps visiting Royals

In his Toronto debut, right-hander Jose Berrios fired six shutout innings at the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, leading the Blue Jays to a 5-1 victory, completing a three-game sweep of the series in baseball’s return to Canadian soil.

Toronto’s offense got all the juice it needed from the bats of Marcus Semien and Santiago Espinal, who cracked homers in support of Berrios.  Acquired from Minnesota at the trade deadline Friday for two minor leaguers, Berrios (8-5) allowed five hits, four of them singles.

Trevor Richards retired all four batters he faced and Tim Mayza got five outs as Toronto won for the fifth time in six games.  Olivares ended Kansas City’s 17-inning scoreless streak with a two-out homer off Mayza in the ninth, his second.

With the Royals struggling in Toronto, the St. Louis Cardinals, playing the Minnesota Twins at Busch Stadium, won for the fourth time in six games, winning the interleague contest, 7-3.

Adam Wainwright allowed three runs and six hits in improving to 9-6.  He had five strikeouts and walked only one batter.  Edmundo Sosa was 3 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBI’s.  Jorge Polanco homered for Minnesota, losers of four of their last five games.

Both the Royals and Cardinals had scheduled off days on Monday.
