Coming into Monday night’s boys quarterfinal in the Hamilton Invitational Tournament, the Trenton Bulldogs and the Richmond Spartans were headed in opposite directions. Just one week earlier, Richmond had beaten the Gallatin Bulldogs to claim the championship of the Lawson Tournament, and came into Hamilton with a mark of 12-5, while Trenton went 0-2 at Lawson, with losses to Hamilton and West Platte leaving the Bulldogs at 5-9.
In the only seed “upset” from Monday night, Trenton flipped the script with Richmond, jumping out to a 16-3 lead after one quarter, and never trailing in beating Richmond 60-31, in action broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7.
Carson Radcliff led Trenton with 17 points, with Max McNabb adding 15, and Carson Burchett 11 points. For Richmond, Clayton Coldwell had 10 points. The win sends Trenton into Friday night’s semifinal round (9 PM) while dropping Richmond into the consolation semifinals (Thursday at 9 PM).
In Monday’s other boys quarterfinal encounter, the top-seeded East Buchanan Bulldogs trounced Braymer, 75-32, led by junior Ethan Kilgore’s 16 points.
In girls play on Monday afternoon, the Penney Lady Hornets opened play in their own tournament with a 65-35 win over the Braymer Lady Bobcats, with Graycen Prothero scoring 17 points and Nora Ford 14 for Hamilton. Dallas Hall and Jasmine Taylor both scored 13 points for the Lady Bobcats.
The #4 seeded Richmond Lady Spartans, with McKenzie McBee and Lexi Pierson both scoring 16 points, defeated East Buchanan, 43-27.
Tuesday’s icy weather forecast has postponed the Hamilton Tournament for 24 hours, with all games scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday pushed back 24 hours from their original start time. Penney Athletic Director Rick Ross says the originally scheduled Friday night games have been moved to Saturday, making January 26th a six-game day.
