Cardinals push to .500 with back-to-back wins in San Diego

MLB

In Tuesday night’s game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres, the Cardinals emerged victorious with a 5-2 win, taking the first two games of the three-game series.

The Cardinals’ offense was sparked by a two-run homer from Willson Contreras off Padres pitcher Yu Darvish in the sixth inning. This pivotal hit gave the Cardinals a lead they would not relinquish. Miles Mikolas earned the win for St. Louis, pitching six solid innings and allowing two runs on seven hits.

Ryan Helsley secured the victory for the Cardinals with his first save of the season in two opportunities. Before the game, the Padres held a moment of silence to honor Larry Lucchino, their former CEO and president who passed away earlier that day.

Darvish pitched effectively for the Padres until the sixth inning, where he surrendered the go-ahead homer to Contreras. Despite striking out six and allowing only five hits, Darvish was charged with three runs over seven innings.

The Padres had taken an early 2-1 lead, with Luis Campusano and Tyler Wade contributing RBI hits. However, the Cardinals’ offense came alive late in the game, scoring two more runs in the eighth inning to secure the win.

In the series finale scheduled for Wednesday, the Cardinals will send Zack Thompson to the mound, while the Padres will counter with Joe Musgrove.
