Chiefs sign two, cut two in off-season maneuvering

NFL

The Chiefs signed tight end Orson Charles and safety Damariay Drew to contracts on Thursday. Along with the signings the Chiefs cut receiver Jamari Staples and safety Devin Chappell.

Chappell, the unbdrafted free agent from Oregon State, was waived with an injury designation. Once he clears waivers he can rejoin the team and be placed on the injured reserve.

Listed at 6 feet 3 and 247 pounds Charles, 26, was a fourth round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft from Georgia. He has played for the Bengals, Saints and Lions before getting released in October.

Charles has caught nine passes for 109 yards in 31 games. No offensive snaps were recorded last year with the Lions but appeared on 31 on special teams.

Charles will wear No. 85 this season.

Drew, 23, missed his entire 2016 senior season at Cal due to an ACL injury. In his junior year Drew finished with 71 tackles, six passes defensed and two picks in 11 starts.

Drew did not qualify for a sixth year of eligibility in. Despite the injury, Drew ran a 4.60 40-yard dash and vertical-jumped 35 inches at his pro day but went drafted this year. He is listed at 5 foot 11 and 200 pounds. Drew has been assigned Chappell’s old No. 46.

Staples, 22, was originally signed as an undrafted free agent from Louisville in May.
