Chillicothe wins road test at THS in girls tennis dual, 7-2

The Chillicothe Lady Hornets picked up five singles victories, and swept the doubles competition, claiming a 7-2 win at rival Trenton High School in girls tennis action on Thursday afternoon.  

In varsity play, Chillicothe’s triumphs came in decisive fashion, with Hunter Keithley, at #2 singles, defeating Elle Neal 8-2; Macy Cavanah sweeping Latorrie Johnson at #4 singles 8-love; and Hannah Zimmerman rolling to an 8-1 win over Morgan Dolan at #6 singles.  In the most competitive singles match of the evening, at #3 singles, the Lady Hornets’ Hannah Cypert held off a strong challenge from Kendall Crowley to win 8-5.

Trenton’s singles win came from the racket of #1 entry Emma Gilham, by an 8-1 final over Gracy Reeter, and Lexi Gott, at #5 singles, an 8-2 winner over Lucy Reeter.

At #2 doubles, Chillicothe’s “Reeter’s” rebounded with an 8-2 win over Trenton’s Neal and Johnson.  At #1 doubles, Keithley and Cypert beat Gilham and Gott 8-5, while Cavanah and Zimmerman, at #3 doubles, downed Crowley and Dolan, 8-2.

The schools, at the JV level, played six doubles matches, with Trenton winning four to Chillicothe’s two.

Lady Bulldog winners were Bailea Jeannoutot and Alaina Overton (over Lourence and Snider) 4-1, Baley Catron and Trinity Gaunt (over Crowe and Keller) 4-1, Harley Hall and Kaylor Farris (over Grable and Anderson) 4-2, and Leslie Cotiangco and Catron (over Crow and Keller) 4-love.

Chillicothe JV triumphs came from Ishmael and May (4-1 over Gwyneth Foster and Mallory Sole), and McElwee and Sisson (5-4 with a 7-3 tiebreaker) over Emilee Lovell and Amanda Parrack.

Trenton Coach Tammy Ockenfels, referring to the varsity match, told KTTNSports.com, “I’m proud of how the girls played tonight.  They all had some impressive rallies and are getting better each match.  Emma Gilham and Lexi Gott dominated in singles and played a close doubles match.  Kendall Crowley is getting stronger in her singles and is improving her mental game!”

Trenton is right back in action on Friday, playing at the Benton Tournament in St. Joseph.
