Fourth-quarter rally evaporates in Princeton overtime slump, loss to Worth County

High School Basketball

The Princeton Lady Tigers, in the fourth quarter of Friday night’s consolation final at the Albany Basketball Tournament, outscored Worth County 16-11 to force overtime, but after scoring nearly half of their points in the final eight minutes, PHS failed to hit a shot from the field in the extra session, and fell in overtime to WCHS 43-37.

The first half was low-scoring and rugged, with Princeton holding a slight 13-11 lead at the break.  A 14-7 advantage for Worth County in the third quarter forced the late rally from Princeton.

Jaelyn Thomas had a game-high 14 points for PHS, with Payton Goodin scoring 9, Lindsey Batson 7, and Vivian Allen six points.  Princeton will host North Harrison on Tuesday night at 6 o’clock in the home opener for the Lady Tigers.

Gladstone had 12 points, New 11, and Adwell eight for Worth County.

In Friday night’s third place girls game at Albany, King City edged South Harrison, 50-49 in overtime.  Brittany Walters led the Lady Wildkats with 21 points while Grace Schottel had 15.

In the boys consolation final, South Harrison won a low-scoring affair with Pattonsburg, taking a 44-33 win.  Treyton Campbell had 20 points to pace the Bulldogs in the 5th place win.

Saturday’s schedule from Albany High School has the King City boys playing Jefferson (3rd place) at 5:30, Jefferson against Stanberry for the girls championship at 7 o’clock, and the Stanberry boys taking on GRC West rival Worth County at 8:30, with a championship trophy going to the winner.
