Green City sweeps Grundy R-5 in Friday doubleheader

The Green City Gophers defeated the Grundy County Panthers in a softball / baseball doubleheader on Friday night.  The Lady Gopher softball team pulled away from the Lady Panthers with two runs in the 3rd, five in the 4th, and two more tallies in the 5th, for a 9-2 win in the opener.  Grundy scored single runs in the top of the 6th and top of the 7th innings.

Four errors by the Grundy R-5 defense were one of the major storylines of the contest, as Green City talled the nine runs on only three base hits. Matana Munday paced Grundy with a 3 for 4 game, with a pair of doubles.

The Lady Panthers are now 2-2 on the fall season.

The Gophers dominated the baseball contest, winning 12-0.  Andrew Garcia had a base hit for Grundy R-5.  Wayne Baxter pitched three innings for the Panthers, giving up nine runs with a strikeout and four walks allowed.  Garcia pitched an inning, striking out one batter, and giving up three runs with one base-on-balls.

The Grundy R-5 softball team will host Winston on Tuesday night at 5:30.  The Panther baseball team will host Tri-County on Tuesday, September 13th at 7 o’clock.
