King City moves into Stanberry semifinals, springing two Tuesday night upsets

The King City Wildkats, both seeded sixth coming into the Stanberry Invitational Basketball Tournament, were eager to make some noise from the bottom half of the bracket.  On Tuesday night, both teams from KCHS did just that.

The King City girls, playing GRC West rival Stanberry, stunned the Lady Bulldogs on their home floor 54-44, as Brittany Walters had 17 points and Shae Gilbert 15 for the Lady Wildkats.  Stanberry had 13 points from Lily Osborn.  King City advances to play Class 1 defending state champion Mound City in a 7:30 semifinal on Thursday night, while Stanberry dropped into the consolation semifinals, where the Lady Bulldogs rebounded with a 44-25 win over Worth County on Wednesday night.

Stanberry’s girls will play North Andrew in the consolation final, as the Lady Cardinals rolled past Albany on Wednesday afternoon, 47-9.

The Jefferson Lady Eagles cruised past Albany on Tuesday afternoon, 56-22, moving the #1 seeds from Conception Junction into a 4:30 semifinal on Thursday with the #4 seeded South Nodaway Lady Longhorns. 

On the boys side of the bracket, the King City Wildkats took down the #3 seed Worth County Tigers on Tuesday night, 54-48, as Collin Breckenridge led the upset-minded ‘Kats with 20 points.  Davis Washburn and B.J. Eiberger both had 10.  Worth County had 15 points from Cade Allee with Drake Kinsella adding nine.  Worth County defeated South Nodaway in Wednesday night’s consolation semifinal round, 63-55, moving the Tigers into a consolation final with Mound City, a 67-36 winner over Albany on Wednesday night.

The King City boys will meet the North Andrew Cardinals in a 9 o’clock semifinal on Thursday night, while on the top half of the boys bracket, nearby rivals collide with the Jefferson Eagles tangling with the Stanberry Bulldogs at 6 o’clock.  Stanberry rolled past Albany in Tuesday night’s quarterfinal round, 74-34.
