Local Sports Volleyball

After a championship trip to Carrollton on Saturday, October 3rd, the Trenton Lady Bulldogs hoped the momentum from a 3-1 day and a second straight title would sling-shot the Lady Bulldogs into a successful week.  While not perfect by any means, the Trenton varsity finished the challenging week with a road win, taking down South Harrison on Thursday night in Bethany 25-9, 25-13, 25-15.

The night for Trenton began with the JV taking a 25-11, 25-19 win, as Kaylea Boyle had seven assists, Juliet Schmadeke four kills and three aces, Sarah Washburn three kills, Abby Simpson four assists, and Nautica Dowling five aces and three kills.

Coach Pam Bowden said of the varsity team’s effort that the Lady Bulldogs had “a much better temperment and it showed with the play on the court.  The girls had fun and played well!  It’s fun to coach them when they are “on” their game!”

Evy McCullough led Trenton from the front line with 11 kills, with Olivia Roberts, from the “back line”, adding an ace to go with four kills.  Makenzee Epperson had two aces and three digs, Lilly Berti three kills and two aces, and Ava Simpson eight assists.

Earlier in the week, Trenton had taken a straight sets loss on Tuesday night in a flat performance at Lathrop, just 24 hours after a four-set loss at Chillicothe.

In the Carrollton Tournament championship, Trenton began its day in the morning pool play session with a 25-18, 25-20 win over Brookfield and 25-13, 27-25 sweep against Richmond.  In the third match of the day, Trenton, seeming to hit a bit of fatigue, fell short against Carrollton, 25-19, 25-21.

In the championship match, a rematch against Carrollton, Coach Bowden said her team took advantage of the opportunity for redemption, and swept away the host Lady Trojans in a potential district preview, winning 25-20, 25-20.  McCullough stuffed the stat sheet with six kills, four aces, and two blocks, with Roberts contributing three kills and a pair of aces.  Ava Simpson had a match-high 15 assists, adding two aces.  Epperson had two kills, Lilly Berti three kills and an ace, with Jessa Shipley having two serves end with aces.

The Trenton JV on Saturday, October 3rd at Carrollton took the JV Tournament, winning all four of their matches in impressive fashion.
