Lions take both titles in Gilman City Tournament

The 2022 Gilman City Invitational Basketball Tournament is in the books, with the St. Joseph Christian boys taking a thrilling 57-54 victory over Pattonsburg on Saturday night, as both Lions squads, coming into the tournament as #1 seeds, swept the championship hardware.

The Lady Lions won the girls title 57-40, downing Pattonsburg.  In the girls semifinal round, heard Thursday night on KTTN FM 92.3, St. Joseph Christian withstood a 28-point performance from Princeton freshman guard Addy Henke, downing the Lady Tigers 56-52, while the Princeton boys lost in the semifinal round to Pattonsburg 59-52.

The championship hardware in the Hamilton Invitational Basketball Tournament went to the East Buchanan Lady Bulldogs and Lafayette County Huskers, with the East Buchanan girls downing KCI rival Lathrop on Saturday afternoon 40-31, while the Higginsville boys won a thriller against the Gallatin Bulldogs, 65-63.

Third place went to the East Atchison girls, 46-38 over South Harrison; and the Lathrop boys by a 50-44 margin against East Buchanan.

The Trenton girls, in a game heard Friday night on Hot Country Z 101.7, took a 50-44 win against Lafayette County to finish a 2-1 week.  Mirena King scored 13 points to lead the victorious Lady Bulldogs, with Morgan King adding 12, hitting four three-point shots.  Lily Wallace had 12 points, Britney Looney 12, and Miah Bennett 10 for Higginsville, with the Huskers losing in double overtime to Trenton.

Friday night’s boys consolation final went to Penney High of Hamilton, 67-63 over East Atchison.

East Atchison reached the consolation final with a 72-66 victory over Trenton in Wednesday night’s semifinal round, holding off a Bulldog team that, despite remaining winless, played one of its better games of the season, going into the final quarter tied before a 12-2 run by the Wolves to open the quarter gave East Atchison just enough room to hold on.

The Trenton girls and boys have varsity doubleheaders coming up next week at Lathrop (Monday night) at Stanberry (Friday night).

The championships of the Meadville Tournament went to the Hale boys, 59-53 in overtime against Grundy R-V, and the Mercer girls, with a 49-33 triumph against Meadville.

The Grundy R-V girls won the consolation championship on Friday night, downing Bucklin/Macon County.

The Stanberry Bulldogs swept the championships in the King City Tournament, with the Lady Bulldogs downing DeKalb in dominating fashion, 55-27, while the Stanberry boys took down Northeast Nodaway, 56-45.

Third place in the King City Tournament went to the King City girls and Maysville boys, with the Maysville girls and Osborn-Stewartsville boys winning consolation titles.

The Platte Valley girls and Mound City boys won titles at the North Platte Invitational, with the PV ladies defeating North Platte 56-25, with the boys final going to the Panthers 72-60 over Plattsburg.

The Mid-Buchanan Dragons swept the third place contests, 60-50 over Polo in the girls game and 45-41 over West Platte for the boys.  The consolation championships went to the North Andrew girls, 34-31 over West Platte; and the North Andrew boys, 58-40 over Platte Valley.  Seventh place games went to the Plattsburg Lady Tigers over Mound City 39-34, and the North Platte Panthers, 61-55 over the Polo Panthers.

In the Cameron Tournament, the Maryville girls stunned #1 seed Chillicothe, defeating the Lady Hornets on Saturday afternoon 41-34, while the Smithville boys took the championship game over Winnetonka 55-43.

The Maryville boys took third place over Cameron 71-61, while the consolation finals went to the Chillicothe boys, 50-28 over Lawson; and the Lawson girls over Kansas City Northeast.

With a number of high school tournaments seeing numerous area high school teams this past week, the Milan Wildcats and Putnam County Midgets were not in area tournament play this week.

The state-ranked Lady Wildcats traveled to Lebanon, Missouri to play in the I-44 Girls Classic, winning in Thursday night’s quarterfinal round against St. Charles but falling 98-44 to Class 6 host Lebanon in Friday night’s semifinal round.

The Milan boys lost to South Shelby on Friday night, 58-53, despite 21 points from Chekh Niasse, 14 from Jeremy Bennett, and 12 points from Ahmed Niasse, dropping Milan’s mark to 13-7.

The Lady Wildcats and Wildcats host Marceline in the rescheduled Milan Tournament championship games on Monday night, with both contests to air on KTTN FM 92.3.

Behind 33 points from Landon Wood and 20 points from Zach Heidenwith, the Putnam County boys defeated Green City on Friday night, 78-70, with the Lady Midgets, closing the game on a 15-5 run, holding off Green City 42-32.
