Mercer sweeps Milan in Monday night doubleheader

High School Basketball

The #1 ranked Mercer Lady Cardinals continued their tune-up for what they hope is a championship run, steamrolling the Milan Lady Wildcats on Monday night 76-15.  Mercer scored 20 points in both the 1st and 2nd quarters, and added 30 in the 3rd quarter, in the home-court victory.  Lindsay Wyatt had 21 points, Bailey Owens 17, and Esabel Holt 10 for Mercer, a squad with just one loss (to Class 5 St. Joseph Central) on the season, and two more regular season games before next week’s district play.

Milan had four points from Genesis Sarabia, while Adrianne Weaver, Kenna Michael, and Katlynn Sylvester all had three.

The Mercer boys had a tougher tangle with the Wildcats, but held off a strong third quarter surge from Milan to hold on for a 62-52 win, giving the Cardinals a bounce-back win from their blowout loss to Winston on Friday night.  Senior point guard Bryer Noe was superb for Mercer, scoring a game-high 29 points.  Cash Hartley added 13 and Hunter Shipley 10, as Mercer improved to 18-5 on the season.

Milan had 13 points from Wyatt Bohle, 11 from Ryan Dabney, and 10 points from Kaden Watkins in absorbing the road loss.

Elsewhere on Monday night, the Wildcats rival, Putnam County, was swept in doubleheader action by the Highland Cougars.  The Highland girls blasted the Lady Midgets, 62-32, while the Cougar boys withstood a 35 point performance by Putnam County’s Calvin Heidenwith for an 81-71 win, dropping the Midgets to 14-10 on the season.

The losses for Putnam County short-circuited momentum for the Midget squads coming off championships in the Brashear Tournament.  On Saturday, the Putnam boys hammered Marion County 87-46, behind 32 points from Heidenwith, while the Lady Midgets, buoyed by 20 points and 15 rebounds from Sara Webb, and 20 points from Callie DeVore, beat Higbee 66-55.
