Mound City, North Andrew, Tolton Catholic, Skyline win state track titles

Class 1 and 2 wrapped up the track and field season over the weekend with the state meet, hosted by Jefferson City High School.  The state champions are the Mound City girls (72.5 in Class 1), North Andrew boys (51 in Class 1), Father Tolton girls (55 in Class 2), and Skyline boys (65 points in Class 2).

The North Harrison Lady Shamrocks, on the strength of Haley Craig’s throwing ability, scored 20 points and finished in a 13th place tie with Stanberry.  Craig won the state championship in both the discus and shot put.

The recent string of outstanding female athletic teams at Southwest Livingston continued into the track season, with the Lady Wildcats scoring 32 points, good for 6th place.  Kaylie Campbell led Southwest with a second-place finish in both and discus and 200 meter dash.  

In other Class 1 finshes, Grace Schottel of King City was second in the 400 meter dash, Katelyn Conner of Green City second in the 300 meter hurdles, and Stanberry’s Lady Bulldogs were second in the 4 by 800 relay.

In Class 1 boys, the Stanberry Bulldogs were in 10th place, with 23 points, and Winston in 13th place, with 19 points.  Shelby McMillen of Stanberry is the Class 1 state champion in the shot put.  Green City scored 16 points as a team, good for a 16th place tie.  Bradley Heath had the top individual performance for the Gophers, winning the 300 meter hurdles, with Worth County’s Brevyn Ross second in that event.  Winston High School senior Jordan Leonard finished his superb Redbird athletic career with a runner-up finish in the 200 meter dash.

The KCI Conference was well-represented in the top 10 in the girls Class 2 standings, as Lathrop’s 37 points were good for third place.  Plattsburg scored 32 points to finish 5th.  The Marceline Lady Tigers had 27 points for 7th place.  Top Marceline finishes were second place for Molly Shoop in the long jump, and second place in the 4 by 400 meter relay.

The Penney High School boys team scored 20 points in the Class 2 meet, good for a 11th place tie with Kelly High School.  Brock Swindler of the Hornets finished 2nd in the triple jump.  Milan scored four points in the meet, for a 39th place tie with Plato, Brookfield, and Adrian.  Mauricio Curiel earned the Wildcat point total with a 5th place finish in the high jump.
