NCMC Holiday Hoops wraps up 2016 run with Winston’s 10th victory of the season

The Winston Redbirds improved their record to 10-0, defeating Green City on Saturday afternoon, 59-37 in the final game of Holiday Hoops for 2016 at the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton.  Other final scores on Saturday were the Santa Fe boys beating Mercer, 52-37, handing the Cardinals only their second loss of the season, while the Santa Fe girls claimed a 60-57 victory over the Penney Lady Hornets.

Eight games were played on Friday, December 30th, with the Rock Port boys rebounding from a Thursday night loss to Mercer, beating Southwest Livingston 69-58.  The Polo Lady Panthers earned a victory for the Grand River Conference, 47-35 over South Holt, while the South Holt boys finished a 2-0 run in Trenton with a 53-45 triumph over Polo.  The Summit Christian girls, hours removed from a loss to #3 ranked Mercer, downed Kirksville 35-22.  The Hardin-Central boys took a 56-36 win over North Harrison, the North Harrison Lady Shamrocks took down Hardin-Central 46-36, while Lawson took a doubleheader sweep of nearby Lexington, winning a hotly-contested boys game 51-49 and the girls encounter 49-34.

 On Thursday (December 29th), final scores were the Smithville Lady Warriors over Warrensburg 49-30, the O’Hara girls over Kirksville 61-38, the South Holt boys, in action broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7, beating the Milan Wildcats 56-43, the Milan Lady Wildcats, behind 24 points from Sam DeRyke, downing South Holt 51-32, the Marshall Owls sweeping the Richmond Spartans, 41-23 girls final and 51-41 in the boys game, while the Mercer girls and boys took victories on KTTN FM 92.3, as the Cardinals beat Rock Port 64-49 and the Lady Cardinals beat Class 3 Summit Christian Academy 57-34.
Highlighting Wednesday’s action was the host Trenton Lady Bulldogs (#9 / Class 3) continuing attempts to take down an MEC power.  This time, THS got as close as ever to a “signature victory”, only to come up five points short in a 41-36 loss.  Whitley Richman led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points while Mykah Hurley added nine.  For Smithville, Trace Mosby had 17 and Lexi Moes 15 points.  The Warrensburg Lady Tigers beat Lexington 48-38, Odessa’s girls downed O’Hara 46-36, the Hale girls romped past Gilman City 57-25, the Savannah boys went overtime to knock off Kirksville in a stirring fourth quarter rally 47-41.  The Lathrop Mules defeated the Lexington Minutemen 72-44, the Hale boys tripped up Gilman City, 57-54, and the Odessa boys took a 60-55 win over O’Hara.
After a three-day break over Christmas break, eight games were played on Tuesday, December 27th at NCMC, with the state-ranked (Class 4 / #3) Chillicothe Lady Hornets hammering Grain Valley 53-35.  The Princeton boys beat Norborne 71-45, while the Lady Pirates of NHS beat Princeton 51-36, in a pair of morning games broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7.  In an-all GRC doubleheader, the King City Wildkats swept away the Polo Panthers, winning the girls game 48-34 and the boys encounter 41-34.  Strong teams from North Andrew powered past LaPlata (62-55 boys and 49-32 girls), while the Grain Valley boys beat the Penney Hornets, 60-53.
The Mercer girls, on Friday, December 23rd, played their toughest regular season opponent in years, and despite being tied with St. Joseph Central at the half, fell to the Lady Indians, 56-41.  Jaelyn Haggard led Central, coached by former NCMC standout Jared Boone, with 24 points.  The Lathrop girls beat Savannah 40-27, the Savannah boys shut down South Harrison in a 48-16 Savage win.  The Southwest Livingston girls were very impressive in a 70-27 win over South Harrison, while the Maryville boys defeated the host Trenton Bulldogs 77-50.  The Norborne Lady Pirates romped past Newtown-Harris 64-18, with the Pirates beating the Tigers in boys action 46-30.

On Thursday, December 22nd, scores from Holiday Hoops were the Des Moines North boys over Chillicothe 70-30, the Winston boys over LeBlond 64-59, the Benton girls defeating overmatched Kirksville 54-8, and the Maryville boys over Kirksville 64-50.  In girls finals, Princeton downed Bunker 45-28.  The Princeton boys picked up their 2nd win of the season, taking down Bunker, 48-36.  The Cameron Lady Dragons downed Meadville 36-32, with the Meadville boys upsetting Cameron, 45-43, earning a victory for the Tri-County Conference head-to-head with the MEC.
