The Pattonsburg Lady Panthers claimed a season-opening softball championship in a four-team event (East Harrison Tournament) on Saturday in Cainsville, while the Milan Lady Wildcats dominated play in taking their own tournament title in a five-school round-robin event, also Saturday at Legion Field in Milan.

Pattonsburg beat Mercer in Saturday afternoon’s title game 9-0, leaving the Lady Cardinals at 1-1 heading into a Monday night showdown (5:30 PM) at Princeton.  Mercer opened the season with a convincing 18-7 win over Winston.  Pattonsburg picked up a win in the semifinals over the host East Harrison Lady Bobcats.

Milan hammered three Class 1 opponents, stretching their early season winning streak to four with a 15-0 win over Novinger, a matching 15-0 triumph over Green City, and a 10-0 victory over Grundy County R-5.  The Lady ‘Cats, now 4-1 on the season, will host Brashear on Monday night and Princeton (5:30 PM / KTTN FM 92.3) on Tuesday night, before traveling to Maysville on Thursday.

The Lady Panthers of Grundy R-5 came close to gaining their first win of the year, but lost a hard-fought 9-8, 8 inning game against Novinger.  That was the middle game of the Milan Tournament for Grundy, who opened the morning with a 5-0 shutout loss to Green City, before ending their day with a shutout (10-0) loss to Milan.

The Grundy R-5 softball girls will host Pattonsburg tonight (Monday night) at 5:30, looking to get their first win of the season against a squad coming off of Saturday’s tournament title in Cainsville.
