Record-shattering setback drops Panthers from top perch, South Harrison holds at #10, in state gridiron poll

High School Football

The 92-88 loss at North Shelby on Friday night, in the highest scoring high school football game in the history of the state of Missouri, cost 7-1 Pattonsburg the top position in this weekend’s Missouri Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association poll, released on Monday morning.  Pattonsburg, still with the lead in the Grand River Conference and district races, is now #2 in the state, with 56 points and one of the 7 first place votes in the rankings.  East Atchison, the cooperative team made up of Tarkio High School and Fairfax High School, is the new #1 ranked squad, with 68 points and five first-place votes.  North Shelby, the team that knocked off Pattonsburg, sits at #3, with one first-place vote at 51 points.

East Atchison will end its regular season at Platte Valley on Friday night, with North Shelby hosting ninth-ranked Orrick, while Pattonsburg, looking to secure its first-ever GRC title with a victory, travels to Albany to take on a quickly improving 5-3 Warriors squad, ranked 10th in the state.  Here is Panther Head Coach Scott Cavin:

Mound City is ranked fourth, followed by Southwest Livingston, North Andrew, Appleton City, Worth County, Orrick, and Albany.

In the 11-man state rankings, South Harrison, following a week that saw the Bulldogs gain sole position of first-place in the Grand River Conference, remains ranked 10th in Class 1, with a perfect 8-0 record.  Gallatin, tied with Princeton for second place in the GRC at 5-1, is receiving votes in the 12th spot in the poll.  Marceline holds at #7 and Mid-Buchanan at #4 this week.

Of note in Class 2, the controversy that swirled at #1 ranked Cardinal Ritter’s use of an ineligible player in the first week of the season has resulted in the St. Louis area squad forfeiting the remainder of their games in the 2019 season, and releasing every coach from their duties in the school district.  In the state poll, there are giant ripple effects.  Cardinal Ritter’s punishment and decision has boosted the Lathrop Mules and Maryville Spoofhounds up to #2 (Mules) and #3 (Spoofhounds) this week, with the knowledge that Class 2 now appears wide-open in the postseason, but both programs must go through one another in a potential District 8 showdown looming for November.

Lutheran North, with seven first-place votes, is top-ranked in Class 2 this week.  Third-ranked Maryville, one point behind Lathrop (76 points to 75), has the other two first-place tallies.  Centralia moved up a spot to #4, with Clark County up to #6, and Palmyra checking in at #9 this week.
