Richman surges over 1,000 career points, Trenton sweeps GRC games with Maysville

High School Basketball

The Trenton Bulldogs came into the first week of 2017 in first place in the Grand River Conference’s Eastern Division, and made sure, in definitive fashion, they would remain there headed into the weekend, dominating Maysville in a Friday night doubleheader, broadcast on KGOZ-TV.

In the girls game, THS senior Whitley Richman entered just nine points shy of 1,000 in her Lady Bulldog career, and after scoring 10 first quarter points, Richman had the milestone, while helping Trenton blitz Maysville in a 66-21 victory.  Richman finished the night with 17 points, and was named 2017 Courtwarming Queen in a ceremony after the girls contest had ended.  Ainsley Tolson and Mykah Hurley both added 13 as Trenton, ranked #8 this week in the MBCA’s Class 3 state poll, moved to 9-2 overall, and 3-0 in the GRC East, one game ahead of 2-1 Gallatin, South Harrison, and Putnam County.  Maysville, falling to 0-3 in conference play, had Cat Whiteman with a team-leading seven points.  Cole Little was named THS Courtwarming King after the game.

The Trenton boys rode the superb first-half shooting of senior small forward Spencer Harris to a 63-24 victory over the visiting Wolverines.  Harris helped bring the Bulldogs out of an early offensive slump to a 15-10 lead after the first quarter.  A 20-3 second quarter tally by the Bulldogs put the game quickly out of reach for Maysville’s upset hopes.  Connor Cotton had 10 points for the Bulldogs, now 9-4 overall, and a perfect 3-0 in the GRC.  The win moves Trenton into a first place tie with Putnam County on top of the GRC East standings, with 2-0 Milan just 1/2 game back.  All three of those teams have meetings with one another later in January, with Trenton headed to Milan on Friday, January 20th.  South Harrison, a team traveling to Trenton on Thursday, January 19th, is sitting at 2-1 in conference play.

Maysville, now 5-6 overall and 1-2 in GRC East play, has led by Austin Shirk with seven points.

Trenton will spend next week at the Lawson Tournament, with Maysville traveling to play in the Lathrop Tournament.
