Shields wins 3rd place, Ockenfels and Houghton team for 6th, at Cameron Tennis Tournament

The Trenton Bulldog tennis team traveled to Cameron on Friday morning, to participate in the annual Cameron Tournament.  Nick Shields of the Bulldogs went 3-1 on the day to finish in 3rd place, while the doubles team of Kade Ockenfels and Creed Houghton sandwiched losses in their first and last match of the day with three straight victories in consolation bracket play, finishing in 6th place.

Gabe Swann went 1-2 in singles play while the doubles entry of Weston Otto and Jeremy Elliott, getting their first taste of varsity level action, went 0-2 on the day.

In his first match, Shields defeated Warrensburg’s Colhour in an 8-love rout, moving into the quarterfinals, where an 8-1 victory over Copper of Higginsville followed.  Shields lost to Lierz of Bishop LeBlond in the semifinals 8-3, before rebounding in the 3rd place match to down Young of Savannah 8-2.

In his first-round singles match, Gabe Swann of Trenton lost a tight match of Sommers of LeBlond 9-7.  Swann came back in the first round of consolation play, beating Anderson of the host Cameron Dragons 8-6.  In a tiebreaker in the second round of consolation play, Swann lost 7-6 (7-5) to Kempf of Maryville.

In doubles action, the Bulldog entry of Ockenfels and Houghton was doubled up by the Chillicothe team of Maasdam and Larson 8-4.  Three straight victories for Ockenfels and Houghton followed, 6-2 over Roush and Schreck of Maryville, 6-4 over Handsaker and Ervin of Savannah, and 6-1 in a rematch against Maasdam and Larson of Chillicothe.  In the consolation final, Ockenfels and Houghton lost to Terrell and Conley of Warrensburg 6-1.

Weston Otto and Jeremy Elliott met Conner and Hoefer of Higginsville in the first round and absorbed an 8-1 defeat.  In a closer consolation match, Otto and Elliott were defeated by Johnson and Hegeman of Savannah 6-3.
