Stanberry girls, South Harrison boys win Grand River Conference track championships

The Grand River Conference held its annual track and field meet on Monday afternoon at Albany, with the Stanberry Lady Bulldogs racking up 145 points to win a team title, joined by the South Harrison Bulldogs, winning the boys side of the meet, with 122 1/2 points.  The Braymer girls were second with 90 points, followed by Maysville’s 78, while for the boy’s, Stanberry was runner-up with 80 1/2 points, followed by Worth County in third with 79 points, and Polo fourth with 76.

The Princeton girls, with 15 points, finished in 10th place, while the Gallatin Lady Bulldogs only managed 53 points in a sixth place finish.  The Princeton boys amassed 73 points in finishing fifth, with the Gallatin boys, with 48 points, in ninth place.

GRC individual girls champions were Albany senior Sarah Poppa in the 100 meter dash (13.39 seconds) while King City sophomore Grace Schottel, with a time of 27.88 seconds, won the 200 meter dash.  Schottel backed up her 200 win with a victory in the 400 meter dash, running 1:02.16.  Stanberry sophomore Halley Wilmes ran 2:33.46 to win the 800 meter run, with Braymer senior Mallory Hughson taking the 1600 title, in 5:51.08, and Stanberry sophomore Kali Peterson the 3200 meters, in 13:01.62.  Braymer’s Hughson won the 100 meter hurdles (17.15 seconds) and 300 meter hurdles, in 50.68 seconds.

In the girls relays, Albany’s team of Sarah Poppa, Kaleigh Janssen, Madalyn Rainey, and Cassie Jones, with a time of 53.38 seconds, won the 4 by 100 relay.  That same group won the 4 by 200 relay for the Lady Warriors, in a time of 1:55.10.  Stanberry’s group of Madesen Gage, Madelyn Luke, Peyton Gage, and Halley Wilmes won the 4 by 400 relay, in 4:29.11, while Gage, Peterson, and Wilmes of Stanberry were joined by Allison Marticke in winning the 4 by 800 relay for the Lady Bulldogs, in a time of 10:43.29.

Stanberry freshman Marissa Jensen took the high jump title, at 5 feet even.  South Harrison senior Kiana Bennett, going nine feet, won the pole vault competition.  Braymer sophomore Kelsey Stone leaped 15 feet, 5 1/2 inches to win the long jump, while Maysville junior Madison Helms took the triple jump, at 28 feet, 4.75 inches.

In throwing events, Stanberry junior Cameron Gage took the shot put, at 33 feet, 1 inch, while Maysville junior Peyton Flanders, with a toss of 96 feet, 2 inches, took the discus title.

In boys results, South Harrison senior Bryce Kirk is the GRC’s 100 meter dash champion, running a time of 11.68 seconds.  Kirk also won the long jump, with a best effort of 19 feet, 4.25 inches. Worth County senior Brevyn Ross went 23.91 seconds to win the 200 meter dash, while taking the 300 meter hurdles championship, with a time of 40.49 seconds.  Polo senior Parker Smith ran 53.41 seconds to win the 400 meter dash, while South Harrison senior Chris Spence took the 800 title, with a time of 2:08.29.  Princeton freshman Logan Dunkin continued his outstanding spring in the distance races, winning the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:55.02 and 3,200 meters at 10:54.70.  In the 110 hurdles, Albany’s Seth Cline won the race at 16.02 seconds.

South Harrison’s team of J.D. Johnson, Bryce Kirk, Kinser Corbett, and Stanton Blake, with a run of 46.14 seconds, took the 4 by 100 relay.  Albany’s Seth Bennett, Khol Bounds, Colton Coburn, and Drake Naylor ran 1:37.17 to take the 4 by 200 crown.  Gallatin’s Bulldogs picked up a victory in the 4 by 400 relay, as Chad Walker, Morgan Corwin, Braydon Walker, and Tate Hancock put up a winning time of 3:40.44.  Stanberry took the 4 by 800 title, with a time of 8:41.66 posted by Cory Luke, Alex McQuinn, Brad Hailey, and Shanen Law.

In field events, Worth County senior Ben Badell won the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches), Gallatin senior Tate Hancock the pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches), Braymer junior Jordan Miller in the triple jump at 38 feet, 8.5 inches, and Stanberry senior Shelby McMillen in the shot put, with a throw of 48 feet, 3 inches.  Princeton junior Stephan Elliott, second in the shot put, won the discus competition, with a throw of 162 feet, 2 inches.
