Trenton Bulldogs beat Savannah 7-2, improve tennis record to 2-1

The Trenton Bulldogs claimed victory in a highly competitive tennis duel on Tuesday afternoon with the visiting Savannah Savages, winning seven of nine varsity matches played.  The Savages JV got the better of Trenton, winning five of seven matches in the action at Trenton High School.

In varsity singles action, Trenton #1 entry Nick Shields dominated his match against Tage Young, winning 8-1.  Two THS singles players won by 8-2 finals, with #5 Creed Houghton downing Kyle Johnson and #6 Gabe Swann defeating Joshua Hegeman.  Trenton’s #3 singles player Kade Ockenfels took an 8-3 win over Bayten Krumme, while #2 entry Jacob Davis downed Aidan Ervin 8-5.

The most competitive singles match of the day went to Savannah, with Raven Handsaker of the Savages dueling with Wyatt Neal of the Bulldogs to an 8-8 tie in the #4 seed match.  Handsaker took the tiebreaker 7-5 to salvage one singles win for Savannah.

In doubles play, Trenton’s teams of Shields and Davis won 8-6 (vs Ervin/Handsaker) while Ockenfels and Houghton teamed for an 8-5 win (vs. Young/Johnson).  Savannah’s #3 doubles team of Krumme and Hegeman beat Neal and Swann of THS 8-6.

The win improves Trenton’s head-to-head record to 2-1 this season, dropping Savannah to 1-4.

One singles match and six doubles matches were played at the junior varsity level on Tuesday afternoon, with Trenton only managing a pair of wins.  Both came from the doubles team of Weston Otto and Jeremy Elliott, who beat Brosi/Butcher (7-6) and Briner/Montoya (5-0).  Weston Otto lost 4-6 to Savannah’s Jake Kennedy in JV singles.  Colton Hamilton and Elijah Oyler of Trenton went 0-2 in doubles play, by scores of 1-6 and 4-5.  Reece Miller and Riley Raymo fell by score of 6-7 and 3-5, also finishing 0-2.
