Trenton falls behind early, uses dynamic offense to catch, overwhelm Gallatin

High School Softball

For the first time in conference play in 2017, the Trenton Lady Bulldogs fell behind their opponent, with a Karley Salmon single brought in Aubrey Feiden to give the visiting Gallatin Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st.  In the bottom of the inning, Trenton missed on a bases loaded, one out opportunity giving more confidence to the GHS girls.

That moment of confidence represented the high-water mark for Gallatin, as Trenton’s powerful offense got on the board with a wild pitch and throwing error scoring Jayden Roeder and Ashten Whitaker in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  Later in the inning, with Mykah Hurley on third base, Salem Croy looked to extend the Trenton advantage.  Tom Johnson had the call:

Given a 4-1 lead, Trenton’s Ainsley Tolson settled into the pitching circle, retiring Gallatin in order in the 3rd, and sending Trenton right back to the plate in the home half of the frame.  Eight runs and 12 batters later, the lead was 12-1, with THS well on their way to victory #7 of the season.

Croy did more damage for the home team in the 3rd inning outburst, stepping to the plate with Tolson on third base and Hurley on second:

Freshman Maci Moore, playing the designated player position for Trenton on Tuesday night, came up to bat as the 10th batter of the inning, after leading off the 3rd inning with a double, later driven in on an Ashten Whitaker single:

In the Gallatin fourth, the Lady Bulldogs scraped across a run as a fielding error scored Karley Salmon.  In the Trenton 4th, Ainsley Tolson scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the night, after driving in Lexi Whitaker with an RBI single.  The Trenton win, 14-2 in five innings, was broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7.

With the hard-hit run-scoring knocks getting the largest share of the attention for Trenton of late, Coach John Cowling noted that the ‘bloop’ hits garnered by his team’s offense remain an overlooked key to early season success:

Trenton, now 7-1 on the season, improves to a perfect 3-0 in the Grand River Conference’s Eastern Division.  Gallatin, in falling to 2-3 on the campaign, is 0-2 in GRC play.  Gallatin will play Princeton with Trenton hosting South Harrison on Thursday night at 5:30.

In Milan on Tuesday night, the Lady Wildcats won a wild affair against Princeton, winning by a final score of 10-9.  In action broadcast on KTTN-FM 92.3, the win pushed Milan’s overall record to 6-1, with the Lady ‘Cats sitting at 2-1 in the GRC, one game behind Trenton.  Princeton is 0-3 in conference play, with losses to Trenton, South Harrison, and Milan.

The Polo Lady Panthers took a hard-fought win over Maysville on Tuesday night by a score of 7-6.  Putnam County kept pace with Trenton a top the East standings with a 9-0 shutout of South Harrison.

On the Western side of the GRC, Stanberry beat Worth County 7-0, Albany was a 10-2 winner over North Andrew, and King City took a 9-2 decision over Braymer.  In HDC softball action, Mercer defeated Winston 9-3, improving to 2-2 on the young season.
