Trenton, Gallatin teams advance in GIT quarterfinals with Tuesday night wins

High School Basketball

The Trenton High School and Gallatin High School basketball teams swept doubleheaders against Grand River Conference foes on Tuesday night, as the Gallatin Invitational Tournament completed its quarterfinal round.

The #1 seed Trenton Lady Bulldogs, by the admittance of Coach Brian Upton, did not play their best, but had plenty of firepower to defeat #8 seed Polo 52-24.

Trenton opened on an 18-5 run in the first quarter, but struggled mightily with decision-making and turnovers in the second quarter, outscored 8-5 and earning the Lady Bulldogs a halftime rebuke from Coach Upton.  THS responded in the third quarter, putting the game away with a 19-4 edge.

Coach Upton talked about the uneven performance of the team after the contest:

Whitley Richman led Trenton with 16 points, while Salem Croy added 10.  Trenton is 2-0 to start the season.  Jenni Farmer led Polo with 12 points.

The Trenton boys rode 33 combined points from Spencer Harris (17) and Corbyn Guile (16) to a 56-35 win over the Polo Panthers.  The win improves the Bulldogs to 2-0 on the season.

Coach Jeremy Austin was generally pleased with the performance of his 2nd-seeded Bulldogs:

The Gallatin Lady Bulldogs showed speed, depth, and talent in routing the Maysville Lady Wolverines by a final score of 70-24.  Karley Salmon led Gallatin with 16 points, with Courtney Shubert adding 12, and Taylor Sloan 10 points.

The Gallatin boys had a tougher time with the Wolverines, but pulled out a 49-39 victory on their home floor on Tuesday night.  Chad Walker and Jett Simmons led a balanced Gallatin attack with 11 points each, with Dylan Burns adding 10.  For Maysville, Brett Sooter had 13 points with Austin Shirk adding 11.

Tonight (Wednesday night) from the GHS gym, the consolation semifinals will be played, with the Maysville Lady Wolverines playing Winston at 4:30, the Maysville boys drawing Gilman City at 5:45, the Polo Lady Panthers opposite Gilman City at 7:00, and the Polo boys against Hardin-Central at 8:15.

In the championship semifinals on Thursday night, the Gallatin Lady Bulldogs battle Hardin-Central at 4:30 and the Winston boys are challenged by Daviess County rival Gallatin at 5:45.  Trenton’s Bulldogs will play in the “late” semifinals at Gallatin, with the Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs taking on Braymer.  The girls game at 7 o’clock is followed by the 8:15 boys contest.  Both Trenton/Braymer games will be broadcast LIVE on Hot Country Z 101.7 and www.kgozfm.com, with Tom Johnson on the play-by-play call from Gallatin High School.
