Trenton girls hold at #3, Milan boys fall four spots, North Andrew claims top spot in latest state poll

High School Basketball

The Missouri Basketball Coaches Association (MBCA) has released its seventh high school basketball poll of the 2017-2018 season, highlighted by the rise of the unbeaten North Andrew Cardinals to the top spot in boys Class 1.  North Andrew, at 15-0, still has not clinched the Grand River Conference’s Western Division title however, as that reward will go to the winner of the Cardinals showdown game at #7 ranked St. Joseph Christian on Tuesday, January 30th.

The Winston Redbirds are ranked sixth this week in Class 1, although that ranking did not take into account the second loss of the season for WHS, which occurred on Tuesday night against the St. Joseph Christian squad.  The Meadville Eagles, the top seed in this week’s Meadville Tournament, are ranked #9.

Friday’s loss by the Milan Wildcats at Trenton cost the GRC Eastern Division leaders four spots in the Class 2 poll, with Milan dropping from #3 to #7.  The Wildcats regained the lead in the GRC East with a 76-72 win at Putnam County on Tuesday night, and can clinch a spot in the GRC championship game, and a February 2nd trip to either North Andrew or St. Joseph Christian, with a win over Gallatin on Tuesday, January 30th.

Cardinal Ritter is top-ranked for Class 3 boys, with Clark County at #3 and Hogan Prep, coming off a road win at St. Joseph Lafayette earlier this week, checking in at #8.

St. Louis Vashon leads the Class 4 boys rankings, with Webster Groves on top of Class 5.

In the girls rankings, the Trenton Lady Bulldogs remain #3 for the second consecutive week, behind the two teams that met in March for the Class 3 girls title, as Strafford remains #1, with Whitfield at #2.  The Clark County girls are ranked #5 in Class 3.

In Class 1, the Green City Lady Gophers have achieved their highest ranking of the season, up to #4 this week, behind #1 Walnut Grove, #2 Madison, and #3 South Iron.  Norborne, playing in the Keytesville Tournament this week, is ranked #7.  In Class 2 girls, the GRC Western Division champion Stanberry Lady Bulldogs are ranked #7, with Stanberry likely to host Trenton in the GRC championship game on Friday, February 2nd.  Trenton’s girls need to beat either Polo (Monday) or Putnam County (Tuesday) to clinch the GRC East title.  Mid-Buchanan is ranked #3 in Class 2 girls, with Sklyine in the top spot.

Incarnate Word and St. Joseph Benton hold the top two positions for another week in Class 4 girls, while Kirkwood is setting the pace in Class 5, followed by Lee’s Summit West.

Here, in its entirety, is this week’s poll.
