Trenton tennis beats the storm, blanks the Trojans in season opener

Tennis

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs were able to complete seven of nine varsity matches before strong thunderstorms overtook the Trenton High School tennis complex on Tuesday afternoon, impressively beating visiting Carrollton by a final of 7-0.

Only Emma Gilham (down 3-7 to Cierra Sweeney) and Elle Neal (down 3-4) to Sara Bailey were unable to finish their matches before the lightning became too close to continue.  Gilham was playing at #1 singles and Neal at #2 singles for THS.

In #3 singles, Trenton’s Kendall Crowley beat Kaylee Hall 8-1.  In the #4 singles match, Latorrie Johnson beat Sophia Duff 8-5, while Trenton’s Lexi Gott (#5 singles) and Morgan Dolan (#6 singles) won by identical 8-love finals (over McKayla Benn and Bayleigh Medlock respectively).

In varsity doubles, Gilham and Crowley, playing the #1 match, beat Sweeney and Bailey 8-2.  In the #2 match, Neal and Johnson were victorious, 8-3 over Hall and Benn, while Gott and Dolan, at #3 doubles, beat Duff and Medlock, 8-1.

In junior varsity action, Trenton’s Gwyneth Foster beat Cameron Belmore 6-love, while Emilie Lovell of THS beat Belmore 6-2.

Trenton Head Coach Tammy Ockenfels, in comments provided to KTTN, said, “I was very proud how the girls took control as soon as they entered the courts.  It is great to start our season off with a win!”
