Wolverine rally keeps Trenton winless in GRC, Lady Bulldogs hit by eligibility error, take forfeit loss

High School Basketball

The Trenton Bulldogs headed to Maysville on Monday night, for a pair of varsity basketball contests to wrap up the Eastern Division portion of the 2019-2020 Grand River Conference season.

In the opener, the Lady Bulldogs, playing without leading scorer Maci Moore to due a bout with the flu, fell behind 13-9 after one quarter, but suffocated the Lady Wolverines offense from there, as senior Lexi Whitaker picked up the offensive punch in Moore’s absence, scoring a game-high 18 points in a 40-29 THS victory.  Kendall Crowley had six points and McKayla Blackburn five for Trenton.  Maysville was paced by nine points from Sadie Smith.

However, on Tuesday morning, the Trenton coaching staff discovered an error made over the course of the junior varsity and varsity girls games, with a THS player playing one more total quarter than allowed by MSHSAA guidelines.  The THS Athletic Department, admitting to the error, took an official forfeit loss, dropping the team’s record to 13-8 overall and 5-2 in GRC play, still good for the #2 seed in Saturday’s GRC Showcase in King City.  The forfeit win improves Maysville to 8-12 overall and 3-4 in GRC competition.

The Trenton boys, in the nightcap, look poised to earn the first GRC victory for first-year Head Coach Corbin Coe, but a furious fourth-quarter rally by Maysville sent the Wolverines to a dramatic 50-47 home-court victory, locking Trenton into the 8th seed on Saturday, and a 10:30 meeting with the host King City Wildkats in the annual crossover event.  Logan Kimbrell, in Monday night’s Maysville victory, scored a game-high 21 points for MHS, 13 of those in a 27 point final quarter.  Blayne Kolb added nine for the home team.  Trenton, having lost a 34-23 lead headed into the fourth quarter, had 14 points each from Chase Otto and Royce Jackson.  Maysville is now 3-15 overall and 1-6 in GRC play, dropping the Bulldogs to 3-18 overall and 0-7 in GRC competition.
