Ahead of GRC championship game showdown, Milan moves up three spots in state poll

High School Basketball

The Milan Wildcats bounce-back from a defeat to Trenton nearly two weeks ago has been noticed by pollsters from the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association, as GRC wins over Putnam County and Gallatin to clinch the Eastern Division crown have moved the ‘Cats from #7 to #4 in this week’s Class 2 rankings.  Milan’s Friday night opponent, 19-0 North Andrew, is on top of the Class 1 rankings for another week.

Other highlights of the state poll locally include Meadville up to #6 in Class 1, coming off a Meadville Tournament championship game win over Mercer on Saturday afternoon, while the Winston Redbirds check in at #8.

In the girls poll, there was no movement for the Trenton Lady Bulldogs this week, although, sitting at #3, Trenton had movement both above and below their spot in the Top 10.  Unbeaten South Callaway (18-0) has taken Whitfield’s old spot in the poll at #2, while Whitfield (16-5) falls to #4, one spot behind the 20-1 Lady Bulldogs of THS.  Strafford, at 21-0, remains #1 in the state.

Benton, after losing to #1 Incarnate Word by one point last week, remains #2 in Class 4, behind Incarnate Word.

In Class 1, Southwest Livingston, despite a loss to Norborne on Saturday, remained #2, with the voters giving a nod to the Lady Wildcats, who were without All-State forward Kaylie Campbell in that game due to illness.  However, Norborne got a huge boost from the victory, as the Lady Pirates surged to #4.  Green City, still unbeaten after Wednesday night’s 40-37 win over Madison, is #3, with Madison at #5, and Mound City at 7.  Walnut Grove is the top-ranked team in the state.
