Browns lose starting QB Watson to season ending shoulder injury

NFL

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will undergo season-ending surgery due to a displaced fracture to the glenoid of his right shoulder, the team announced Wednesday (November 15) through an official statement on its website and social media platforms.

Watson, who was limited to six starts in the Browns’ initial nine games, made his return from a shoulder injury on November 5. However, he faced setbacks, rolling his ankle twice and experiencing discomfort from the apparent lingering shoulder issue during Sunday’s (November 12) victory against the Baltimore Ravens.

The statement from the Browns read, “Deshaun Watson underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) Monday on two injuries sustained on different plays in the first half of Sunday’s 33-31 win over the Baltimore Ravens. Imaging on his left ankle revealed a high-ankle sprain. In addition, postgame, Deshaun notified our medical staff of a new discomfort in his right shoulder that he felt after a hit in the first half. An MRI of his right shoulder revealed a displaced fracture to the glenoid.”

Despite delivering a commendable performance and completing the game, Watson’s injuries necessitate immediate surgical intervention to prevent further structural damage. Consequently, he will be placed on season-ending injured reserve, with a full recovery anticipated for the commencement of the 2024 season.

Watson, acquired by the Browns in 2022 through a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed sign-and-trade deal with the Houston Texans, achieved a 5-1 record as a starter. During his six starts, he threw for 1,115 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions on 105 of 171 passing. Additionally, Watson recorded 142 yards and one touchdown on 26 rushing attempts.
