Cornelius wins Section 3 title, Chillicothe takes team championship, Gass advances to state in Monday meet at Huntsville

Class 1 girl’s golf sectional tournaments were played across the state on Monday, with eight teams advancing to next week’s state tournament at Mozingo Lake in Maryville, including the Section 3 champion Chillicothe Lady Hornets and the Section 4 champion Stanberry Lady Bulldogs.  Other teams advancing to the state meet are the host Maryville Lady Spoofhounds, courtesy of a runner-up finish in Section 4, and the Kirksville Lady Tigers, with a second-place finish behind Chillicothe in Section 3.

Trenton High School had two golfers in the Section 3 tournament, hosted by Westran, with senior Werthen Gass shooting a 24-over par round of 94, tying for fourth place with Ally Jo Johnson of Gallatin and Bailey Bexten of Harrisburg, advancing all three to the Class 1 state event.  Samantha Cornelius of Penney High School (Hamilton, MO), with a seven-over par score of 77, won the Section 3 tournament.  Chillicothe’s team championship came with a score of 392, followed by second place Kirksville’s 403.  Trenton’s Maci Henson shot 116 (46 over par), finishing below the cut line of 102.

Stanberry won the Section 4 tournament with a score of 389, followed by Maryville’s 398.  Richmond was third at 417 and Odessa fourth with 444.  Vera Bohning of St. Michael the Archangel was the individual champion at 5-over par 76.  Stanberry’s Allison Marticke shot 86 (15 over par) over fourth place, with Stanberry’s Allie Gage in fifth place at 88.

Advancing from Section 1 to the state meet are champion John Burroughs (328) and runner-up Mary Institute Country Day School (MICDS) at 363.  Moving onto Maryville from Sectoin 2 are the champion Springfield Catholic (343) and runner-up Logan-Rogersville (398).
