Lady Bulldogs stay unbeaten, Trenton boys battle inconsistency, in busy three-game stretch

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs are into the semifinals of the Lawson Invitational Tournament, while the THS boys dropped into the consolation round, after Monday night’s results from the quarterfinal round of the 25th annual LIT from Lawson High School.

In Monday’s opener, the Trenton girls continued their rampage through the 2018-19 schedule, hammering #8 seed West Platte in a 66-21 drubbing.  The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-4 lead after the first quarter, and were never threatened in earning the victory.  Maci Moore had a game-high 25 points to lead Trenton, with Ainsley Tolson scoring 15, and Mykah Hurley 11.  The Lady Bulldogs, Thursday afternoon at 4:30 on Hot Country Z 101.7, will play either North Platte or Richmond in the semifinal round.

The other girls quarterfinal on Monday night went to the host Lawson Lady Cardinals, courtesy of a 43-26 win over Gallatin.  Taylor Dolt had 13 points and Natalie Schnetzler 10 for Lawson, moving the Lady Cards into the semifinals at 7:30 on Thursday evening.

The closest game of the night came in the match-up between #6 seed Penney and the third-seeded Trenton boys.  In a tight affair for all four quarters and the overtime session, the Hornets came away with a 59-57 victory, with Cale Whitt leading Hamilton with 21 points.  Braden Potts added 15, on the strength of five made three-point shots.  For Trenton, Dylan Harris had 11 points, Max McNabb had 11, with Jaren Whitney scoring nine, and Carson Radcliff eight.

Hamilton moves into the semifinal round at 5:45 on Thursday afternoon, while Trenton drops into the 5:45 consolation semifinals on Wednesday at Lawson High School.

The host Lawson boys, the #1 seed in the LIT, defeated KCI Conference rival North Platte in Monday night’s late game, 43-30. Coleman Weber had 22 points and Isaac Trout 15 for the Cardinals.

Trenton’s basketball teams, by playing on Monday evening, finished a three game in four night stretch of basketball, as both Bulldog teams played on Saturday evening at the Missouri Hall of Fame Basketball Classic at Benton High School in St. Joseph.  

In action broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7, the Lady Bulldogs passed a strong mid-season test, beating Mid-Buchanan 67-35.  Maci Moore had 14 points, Sidney Lynch 11, and Salem Croy 11 for THS.  Brylee Kemper had 13 points for Mid-Buchanan.

The Class 4 Benton boys used superior depth and athleticism to run away from the Trenton Bulldogs and win, 81-46.  Sophomore Chol Ater led the Cardinals with 18 points, with freshman Allan Coy adding 13, and junior Jaren Kretzer 11 points.  For Trenton, Dylan Harris had 15 points, with Carson Radcliff contributing 13.

On Friday night, Trenton took a pair of home court victories in Grand River Conference action, hosting the Maysville Wolverines, covered live on Hot Country Z 101.7.

The Lady Bulldogs scored all 28 points for both teams in the first quarter and steamrolled the Lady Wolverines 66-27.  Moore had 17, Hurley 14, and Tolson 13 for Trenton.  Hannah Klippenstein led Maysville with eight points.

The Bulldog boys used a late-game surge to open up some breathing room, evening their GRC record at 2-2 with a 50-38 win over Maysville.  Radcliff and McNabb both scored 12 points for Trenton, while Zane Smith had 14 points, including four three-point field goals, for Maysviille, now 3-6 overall and 0-4 in the GRC East play.
