Lady ‘Cats win fifth straight, host Princeton tonight on KTTN

The Milan Lady Wildcats held off a tough non-conference challenge from the Brashear Lady Tigers on Monday night, with a Courtney McCollum sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 7th inning giving Milan a 2-1 victory, improving to 5-1 on the softball season.

Milan opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, with the pitching combination of starter Erin Sayre (four innings) and Maddie Schoonover (three innings) combining to hold Brashear’s offense to just one run.  Katlynn Sylvester scored the game-winner in the 7th, after cracking a triple to get on base.

Elsewhere on Monday night, Princeton won its non-conference ‘rivalry’ matchup against the North Mercer Lady Cardinals, rolling to a 15-0 victory at Gentry Field.

On Tuesday night at 5:30, Princeton, winners of two straight games, plays at Milan, winners of five straight, in a 5:30 first pitch from Legion Field. Dennis Stephenson will have the call on KTTN FM 92.3 of the Grand River Conference East matchup.  Milan is 1-1 in GRC play, with Princeton at 0-2.

From Grundy County High School in Galt on Monday night, the host R-5 Lady Panthers lost to the GRC’s Pattonsburg Panthers 15-4.  Katie Warford got the win for Pattonsburg, with the visitors scoring eight times to break the game open in the top of the 2nd inning.  For Grundy, Zoe Littleton entered the game in the 2nd inning and had four strikeouts.  With the bat, Littleton had a second inning double.  Morgan Axtell had a pair of RBI’s with Emily Otto adding an RBI for Grundy.  Grundy R-5 remains in search of their first win of the season, falling to 0-5, a string of losses that includes two one-run defeats, at the hands of Gilman City and Novinger.

Bucklin-Macon County claimed a softball/baseball doubleheader sweep at Tri-County on Monday night, winning the softball game 10-3, and following that up with a 13-2 win on the Jamesport baseball diamond.

In softball area finals, Lathrop beat Cameron 6-2, Lawson was an 11-1 winner over Higginsville, while the only team to hand Trenton a loss thus far this season, St. Joseph Benton, improved to 6-0 with an 11-4 win over Mid-Buchanan.

North Platte downed LeBlond 15-0, North Andrew beat Northeast Nodaway 13-3, East Buchanan out-slugged Stanberry 11-9, Maryville took a 14-4 decision against Worth County, Plattsburg doubled up North Nodaway 12-6, and Marceline cruised to a 16-6 win over Putnam County. 

The Northwestern of Mendon baseball team won at Glasgow 11-6.
